Solidarity with Ukraine – 4EU+ for Ukraine II / Online workshop: Developing cross-cultural competences
We cordially invite the students of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, V. N. Karazin National University of Kharkiv and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv to participate in an online workshop “Developing cross-cultural competences” organised within the Project 4EU+ for Ukraine II financed by the National Agency for Academic Exchange of the Republic of Poland.

Description
Developing cross-cultural competencies such as: cross-cultural knowledge, cultural self-awareness and knowledge about different culture are essential tools for efficient cooperation in cross-cultural environment. Webinar is planned for 180 minutes.
Aims:
– developing cross-cultural competences
– enhancing cross-cultural awareness
Part one – Introduction: diversity all around us (approx. 30 minutes)
– Icebreaker: How diverse is world around me?
– The influence of culture and socialisation on differences in values, beliefs, customs and attitudes
– Defining one’s own culture – the system of values, symbols and ideals encoded in our tradition as elements forming our point of view
Part two – What is culture shock and how to deal with it? (approx. 30 minutes)
– Culture shock and its stages according to Kalervo Oberg
– Impact of culture shock on the expatriate’s personal and professional sphere
– Conscious adaptation process as one of the strategies to cope with culture shock
Part three – Cultural competence model (approx. 90 minutes)
– Perception of different phenomena in different cultures:
– Approaches to time management: lack vs excess time, mono- vs polychromatic cultures, past vs present vs future
– Communication patterns: high vs. low context cultures, indirect vs. direct, formal vs. informal communication
– Definition of identity and purpose: individualism vs collectivism, doing vs being
– Organisational arrangements: hierarchy or equality, universalism or particularism, competition or cooperation, stability or change
Part four – Summary. (approx. 30 minutes)
– Ethnocentrism and ethnorelativism
– Practical tips
– Top cross-cultural researchers
